**Tic-Tac-Toe** (also known as Noughts and Crosses) is a classic two-player strategy game played on a $3 \times 3$ grid. The objective is to be the first player to align three of your marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row.

---

1. Board & Symbol Setup

* **The Grid:** The game is played on a standard grid of 9 empty squares arranged in a $3 \times 3$ pattern.
* **The Marks:** One player plays as **X** and the other plays as **O**.
* **Starting Turn:** Player **X** traditionally goes first, followed by Player **O**. Turns alternate back and forth until the game ends.

---

2. Basic Gameplay Rules

1. **Taking Turns:** On your turn, place your assigned mark (**X** or **O**) into any empty square on the grid.
2. **Permanent Placement:** Once a mark is placed in a square, it cannot be moved, changed, or covered by another player.
3. **Alternating Moves:** Players take turns placing one mark at a time until someone wins or all 9 squares are filled.

---

3. Winning & Drawing

```
Win (Row) Win (Diagonal) Draw (Cat's Game)
X │ X │ X X │ O │ O X │ O │ X
───┼───┼─── ───┼───┼─── ───┼───┼───
O │ O │ O │ X │ X │ O │ O
───┼───┼─── ───┼───┼─── ───┼───┼───
│ │ │ │ X O │ X │ X
```

* **How to Win:** You win immediately if you get **3 of your marks in a row**—horizontally across any row, vertically down any column, or diagonally from corner to corner.
* **How a Draw Happens:** If all 9 squares are filled and neither player has achieved 3 in a row, the game ends in a tie (often called a **Draw** or **Cat's Game**).

---

4. Fundamental Beginner Strategy

* **Take the Center First:** Securing the center square gives you the most potential winning lines (4 total: horizontal, vertical, and both diagonals).
* **Control the Corners:** If the center is taken, aim for the 4 corner squares, which offer more line connections than edge squares.
* **Block Your Opponent:** Always watch your opponent's move. If they have two marks in a row, your immediate priority is to place your mark in the third space to block their win.
* **Create a Fork:** Try to set up two simultaneous winning lines (a "fork") so that your opponent can only block one of them on their next turn, guaranteeing your win on the following turn.
